My jewelry chains are armor that caresses. The intricate link patterns I use are ancient ones, legacies of a need to protect the body from blows while allowing it to move.
Today this protection is solely talismanic, and the donning of adornments – necklace, earrings, bracelets - prepares the wearer mentally to take on and dazzle the world. My pieces drape smoothly on the body and invite the wearer to fondle them, twisting the individual rings and flexing the chains. Every impulsive contact reinforces the connection with personal inner strength called out by the talisman – I am beautiful, unique, priceless.
Making chains involves animating the stubborn energy of wire, taming it into rings or loops, and manipulating it into flexible forms so smooth that they feel organic, almost alive (amulet almost becomes animal). I enjoy the physical process of working with metal, and relish the careful mathematical planning required to make myriad small parts fit together seamlessly. Process is also an important source of inspiration, as new ideas emerge out of the meditative rhythm of the work.
